Movie Review: Girls Trip

Movie Review: Girls Trip

Let me just start off by saying that you NEED to see this movie! It was one of the rare rated R films that is actually hilarious, without being over-the-top raunchy and ignorant. It displays black women in all of their glory; as beautiful, strong, hilarious, flawed, intelligent, loving humans. The casting was so on-point, I don’t think they could have chosen a better group of women to compliment each other and be so relatable for fellow women of color.

Four best friends from college, Ryan (Regina Hall), Sasha (Queen Latifah), Lisa (Jada Pinkett Smith), and Dina (Tiffany Haddish), travel to New Orleans for Essence Fest and have a crazy ass time. While rekindling their sisterhood and dealing with all the bullshit life throws at them (infidelity, money problems, etc.), these ladies still manage to have a whole lot of fun. From getting in a bar fight, to having a dance-off, to pissing all over people while zip-lining between buildings, these ladies may be crazy, but they damn sure have each others backs when things get tough. Each woman is distinctively different in personality, career path, and struggle, but what this movie does beautifully is remind us just how much we need our friends no matter where we are in life.

Check out this article I wrote for CafeMom:

Here are some of my highlights:

  • Tiffany Haddish stole pretty much every scene she was in! She is HILARIOUS! Be on the look our for her.
  • The moment when Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith channeled a scene from Set It Off… it was ICONIC AF.
  • Ever heard of grapefruit-ing? I won’t even spoil it for you.
  • When Regina Hall’s character addressed cultural appropriation in the best way possible by politely telling her (white) agent not to use colloquialisms such as “woke,” “ratchet,” “Bye, Felicia,” or “preach.” It was much needed.
  • When Regina Hall gave a speech at the end, there was one line in particular that really stuck with me. She said, as black women we often convince ourselves that “it’s better to be disrespected than to be alone.” As someone who has put up with a lot of disrespect for the sake of relationships, this got me pretty emotional. The whole speech was moving and empowering.

If I haven’t convinced you to watch this movie yet, then you’re going to miss out. This film takes #BlackGirlMagic to a level we haven’t witnessed in Hollywood in a long time (if ever).

Great review! I also LOVED Tiffany Haddish in this. She was outrageous but still felt totally authentic (we ALL have a girlfriend just like her in our groups, you know)?
