I often go to work without makeup (you know, when I actually used to go into the office). And after doing it here and there for a while, like most things, you eventually get used to it and feel more comfortable. I actually love to wear makeup. But, what I’ve had to work on, especially as a professional adult, is having a healthy relationship with makeup. There’s a lot of pressure on women to wear makeup. We are often assumed to be “tired” or “not feeling well” if we don’t have it on in public. In order to combat those outdated societal standards, I want to encourage you to ignore the noise, feel confident without makeup, and gain more of an appreciation for your natural beauty.
As I mentioned before, I am very pro-makeup lol. I love it. But now, I’m at a place where I do it because it’s fun and I love it, but not because I think I NEED it to leave the house. Sometimes I put it on and sometimes I don’t. It’s very freeing. However, if you’re not there yet, THAT’S OKAY! Here are a few tips to help you feel confident without makeup.
1. Start by leaving the house without makeup in low-pressure environments, like the grocery store or doctors appointments.
2. When you go makeup free, focus on the things you LOVE about your face, not your insecurities. I love my freckles, but they often get covered up when I’m wearing foundation and concealer. I also love my lips, so on makeup-free days I’m sure to use a good lip balm or a clear gloss.
3. Take care of your skin. Finding the products that work best for you can be a process and take some time. But, also don’t feel like your skin has to be perfect to go makeup-free! We ALL have “blemishes” and you don’t need to be embarrassed of them.
4. Take some selfies without filters. We get so used to seeing ourselves with Snapchat and IG filters that when we see our face without them we get a sense of “shock.” Combat that by taking more pictures of yourself without makeup and filters so you feel more comfortable seeing it. You don’t have to post them either, just get used to seeing your natural beauty more often.
5. Stop comparing. We’re all guilty of looking at celebrities and influencers with “perfect” skin or facial features. Most of that is all glam and editing. It’s not always easy to remember that in the moment, but the more you actively try to stop comparing yourself to others the more free you’ll feel.
6. Put on a cute outfit or some earrings. As I said earlier, we often associate being makeup-free with tiredness or “not feeling well” and that should not be the case. Work against this toxic idea by wearing something that makes you feel good.
