As of this week, I’ve officially lived in New York City for three years! In honor of my New Yorkiversary, I decided to create a Sex and the City look book. Like many other popular shows from the ‘90s-‘00s, SATC had a huge lack of diversity. So, I wanted to reimagine the characters as Black, curvy women on a ~real~ journalist salary lol.

In college, I decided to study fashion because I didn’t see many people that looked like me in that space. TV, film, and other forms of entertainment are no different. And although we’re improving, there’s still a long way to go.

As a curly haired writer in NYC with a love of shoes (even if it is sneakers instead of heels) it’s crazy to think that I’ve become my own version of Carrie Bradshaw. It’s also crazy how so many other plus size people and women of color have had to look up to characters that look nothing like us. So, here’s to being inspired while also claiming space for ourselves — and being the stars of our own show! 🌟

Here’s how to dress like Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha, even if you don’t have a walk-in closet full of designer.

How to dress like Carrie Bradshaw

Carrie’s style is the most iconic of them all. She’s creative and unafraid to try new trends, while still remaining chic at all times. From slip dresses to costume jewelry to her huge collection of heels, Carrie’s sense of fashion is risky, fun, and flirty. I recreated her famous look from the intro with a tulle skirt, a simple tank, and some strappy sandals. I think as long as you have one fun, dramatic piece to ~carrie~ the outfit (in this case, the tulle skirt), it’s really all you need to channel your inner Bradshaw.

How to dress like Charlotte York

Charlotte is sophisticated and feminine. She loves a nice dress with clean lines and cute details, her hair is always neat, and she’s always very put-together. I recreated this pretty pink ensemble with a simple knee-length dress, matching heels, a clutch, and a pair of black sunnies. I pulled my hair up and added some small pearl earrings. If you want to channel Charlotte, just think prim and proper. Charlotte’s style is a great mixture of elegance, with a bit of flair.

How to dress like Miranda Hobbes

Miranda is a badass lawyer who is always on-the-go. She either looks totally office-ready or more relaxed (she tends to rock more sweatshirts and denim on her off days). I recreated one of her more professional looks, since that’s what she’s most known for. You can easily channel Miranda with a pencil skirt and blazer combo. I added a pop of color with my tank and kept the accessories minimal with a watch and silver hoops. For my shoes, I added some simple black heels that are cute, but still super comfy. To feel like Miranda, all you need is a power suit and some sarcastic clap backs.

How to dress like Samantha Jones

Last but never least, is the fabulous Samantha Jones. She’s wild, she’s sassy, and she’s not afraid to show some skin. I went with a sparkly little black dress with a high slit. Whether she’s going to work or hitting the club, Samantha wants to look sexy. She’s also not afraid to get a little gaudy. Which is why I went all the way and added a statement necklace, a leopard print faux fur coat, and black leather boots. When it comes to Samantha’s style, don’t be afraid to be bold, confident, and unapologetic.
