There is something about a space full of black women that just feels so damn empowering. At the end of April I attended the first ever Essence Beauty Carnival and it was such a cool event. I’ve been to other beauty conventions (BeautyCon) and I’ve been to other events for the black community (CurlFest), but this event was definitely a little different from both of them.
The Essence Beauty Carnival took place at Pier 36 in Manhattan — a large warehouse right by the water. On the inside, the venue was spacious and open. It didn’t feel crowded or overwhelming (which was much different than BeautyCon) and it had more of a chill vibe.
There was a main stage, a market area, small exhibit installations throughout, and photo booths. And, when you went outside, there were food trucks with delicious Caribbean food, chicken, sandwiches and more. It was cool to be able to hang out by the stage, walk around and take pictures or shop some of the black-owned brands.
The event lasted two days (Saturday and Sunday) and each day there were different celebrities and influencers on the main stage. Some of the big names in attendance were Ciara, Iman, Sevyn Streeter, Jackie Aina, and Yandy Smith. There were a couple of musical performances and a lot of inspiring panels.
I went with my friend Brianna Moné and Kailena also came along as my photographer (more of her photos below). Of course, they were great company and although we were only there for a few hours each day, we really got to enjoy everything the event had to offer.
I ended up purchasing a beautiful headwrap and an all-natural lip balm. We learned a little bit more about significant moments in the history of black beauty, thanks to the awesome museum installations. We ate good food and we got come super cute pictures, of course.
Overall, I think the event was 100% worth the cost (I got an early bird weekend pass for about $45). It was a unique experience and very inspiring. Also, it was just a really fun way to spend part of my weekend with my friends. The only sort-of criticism I have is that there were not free samples of products and they probably could have had a few more booths or displays in the space. But, I’m really excited to see this event grow and I can’t wait to see how it evolves next year!
