Kailena is a Senior Associate Campaign Manager at an advertising agency in New York City. She is also my roommate and my best friend in the entire world! Kailena graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in advertising in 2016. Since then she has worked at a few ad agencies in both Michigan and New York. In her current role, she works with big name clients such as Applebees and LEGO. In addition to her main hustle, she’s also a freelance photographer (taking many of my blog photos) and a fitness guru.
I admire Kailena for her impressive work ethic, her drive to succeed, and her loyalty as a friend. She is always willing to stay at work late and she’s the first person to support me every time I take on a new project. When she’s not at work, she’s most likely at the gym or playing video games. Q&A
Explain what you do for a living: Basically all the ads that you see on websites and on YouTube, I place those ads for my clients. Even though some people don’t like the ads, it keeps the internet more affordable. It’s cool to see all the data and insights that go into online advertising.
What is your biggest professional accomplishment thus far? I recently got a promotion!
What is a long term goal you have? To open my own business and create multiple streams of revenue.
Describe your style: I like skateboarders from the early 2000’s (I played a lot of Tony Hawk Pro Skater growing up and I really liked their style). I like West Coast street style and Detroit style, like jerseys, cargo pants, Carhart, Dicky’s, and flannels.
Who is your style icon? I don’t know if I have one. I think I just have a style I like and it’s a culmination of different people.
What are your favorite stores and/or brands? I actually don’t have a favorite brand, I just have a specific style. I like things that are more casual street style. I’m pretty price conscious, so I don’t care much what brand it is.
Favorite shoe brand? Probably Vans or Retro Jordans, but I also love a good loafer if I’m dressing up.
All time favorite song or artist? I like Young Thug and a lot of Detroit rappers — I like their sound and I can relate to a lot of things they go through. I also like rock when I’m in the mood or at the gym.
Favorite app on your phone? Either YouTube or Apple Music. But, I’m most addicted to Instagram.
Share one random thing on your bucket list? Make a million dollars (at least).
Life Motto/Favorite Quote? “Ain’t nothing to it but to do it!” & “If you can shape in your mind, you can find it in your life.”
What’s the number one thing that makes you feel like a boss? Honestly, I just be feeling like a boss.
What advice do you have for people who aspire to work in advertising? Network! Especially in New York City, it’s so easy to meet people who work in advertising. Don’t give up and don’t settle and you’ll be able to find a really good job.
