NYFW Review: BRANDON MAXWELL FW20

NYFW Review: BRANDON MAXWELL FW20

On Saturday, February 8, Brandon Maxwell presented his Fall/Winter 2020 collection at the American Museum of Natural History.  The collection of luxe Americana sportswear and evening wear was brilliantly set to the background of very realistic looking wildlife, like bears and moose. The show had a dark and edgy vibe, with pops of lively color throughout. Although I was standing in the back and didn’t have the best view, it still felt like such a fabulous evening to be apart of.

First of all, during the pre-show cocktail hour, Shake Shack burgers and fries were served with sippy cups of rosé. The Americana theme was creatively and thoughtfully displayed from the time you arrived to the landmark location to the time you exited. One noticeable face seen walking in the show was supermodel Bella Hadid. And in the front row, cast members from Netflix’s Cheer were seen having a great time. It felt very “now,” very modern Americana for sure.

The collection was full of gorgeous tortoise dresses, chiffon gowns that moved like water, tailored suits, and cashmere coats.  Almost every look accessorized with low ponytails, fanny packs, and knit beanies (even the evening looks). Everything felt very wearable, and you can even preorder the runway pieces right now. Both the men’s and women’s clothing items are somewhat simple in shape, but the impeccable structure, tailoring, and fabrics really allow the pieces to shine.

I would definitely wear these Brandon Maxwell pieces. They are the kind of timeless coats, blazers, gowns, and tops that are worth investing in. Certainly, you could wear them for many years and style them in so many different ways.

Inclusivity Check: This presentation felt very racially inclusive. There were a lot of models of color and it was gender inclusive as well. Sadly, no plus models were used. Most pieces in the collection go up to a size 14, so although better than many other luxury designers, I’d love to see that expanded in future collections.
