On Sunday, February 9, at about 7 p.m. I headed to a sleek gym in the Financial District. And why exactly was I at the gym on a Sunday night during Fashion Week? Well, for the only possible good reason: to see the new Chromat Fall/Winter 2020 collection. No matter which designers choose to throw one or two size 12 model on the runway, we can always count on Chromat to have all different bodies represented. For that reason, Chromat is always a highlight for the plus community during Fashion Week.
Furthermore, not only is it size inclusive, but it’s very racially inclusive, gender inclusive — there were multiple trans and gender nonconforming models — and there was even an amputee in the show as well. The collection was themed around the Olympics and the models, all decked out in the colorful new collection, performed a series of workouts. This allowed us to see and experience the clothing up close, in action. And these weren’t “cute,” easy workouts either. These models got their sweat on! From weights and floor exercises to a full-on dance routine, I was tired just watching them.
Because of the wide range of bodies that were seen conquering these demanding physical workouts, the audience had no choice but to feel empowered and inspired. Seeing the models be unapologetically themselves, while doing something rather difficult with a smile on their face, relayed the message that we are all worthy. We are all capable. We are all beautiful.
While it was packed and hectic in the gym with all of us crowding around this unique workout class, the presentation definitely made an impact. They blasted Lizzo on the speakers and confidently twerked it out. On the TV screens, you could see different athletes who had been disqualified from athletic events due to gender testing. As for the actual clothes, they are fun, sexy, and functional. The collection includes crop tops, bike shorts, leggings, bodysuits, T-shirts and more. Almost every piece features neon accents, cutouts, or unique geometric designs. I would definitely wear these to workout in, lounge around in, or style up and wear out.
Inclusivity Check: Chromat is pretty much always the most inclusive show at NYFW. Even more, they are not just inclusive for sales and publicity, but at the very core of the brand. The brand’s site and shows are always size, race, and gender inclusive. Chromat offers up to a size 4XL.
