In my Small Biz Spotlight series, I share the stories behind independent brands you should know about, while also giving my thoughts on their products. The goal of this series is to encourage you to support more small businesses, especially those owned by marginalized communities. If you have a brand or know of one that’s interested in a sponsored feature, let me know.
Vegan Pop Eats is a Black-owned, woman-owned online community for people venturing into a plant-based lifestyle. Founded by journalist Angela Yvonne, the purpose of this community and brand is to educate people on veganism and give them a judgment-free zone for sharing their journey. In addition to sharing meals, resources, and advice on Instagram and YouTube, Vegan Pop Eats has recently expanded into offering merchandise as well. Here’s what Angela had to say about the brand…
Tell me about your business. What’s the back story? How did this idea come about?
“I am a journalist that specializes in pop culture and the vegan niche. I found that when I became a vegan there wasn’t a blueprint, so being in media I created a space for people who were wanting to be plant-based and didn’t know where to start. Some call me their Vegan Fairy Godmother because I make the journey not too overwhelming for them.
The T-shirts came about because I want to break the stigma of veganism not being cute or sexy. So, I created a play on words for people to use their imagination.”
What do you want people to know about you and/or your business?
“I am passionate about the wellness of our people and although I am only three years into the journey, it has been worth it.”
What’s next for your business? Any big goals, plans, or new products on the horizon that you can share?
“To continue to build the brand. The goal is to be a visible and accessible brand that always meets you where you are without judgement.”
My Thoughts on Vegan Pop Eats
As someone who is not vegan, I love the fact that the Vegan Pop Eats community is super approachable and positive. I feel like I learn a lot about this lifestyle just by following along on social media. Even if you’re not vegan, this community is still a cool way to learn about healthy dishes and listen to dope women of color share tips and advice in a safe space.
I also snagged one of the T-shirts, which says, “Eat me, I’m good for you.” I love how vibrant and cheeky it is. It’s comfy, makes me giggle, and reminds me to eat my veggies ā which even as a 26-year-old adult, I often forget to do. I would definitely recommend checking it out, along with the other designs she has to offer, at Vegan Pop Eats Shop.
