This month I turned 25! It’s a pretty exciting time because I’m living and working in NYC with my best friend and at this moment things are pretty good! That’s not to say that life is without its stresses and problems, but I’m feeling very happy and excited for this chapter of my life. And if you know me then you know that I love to celebrate! So for my birthday I planned a weekend of fun with my friends. Last year, we went to the wax museum and this year I wanted to do something just as fun and random. So, we went to the burlesque club!
Burlesque at The Slipper Room
This was all of our first time at a burlesque club. It was me and four of my friends (plus one of my friend’s brought her mom lol). We honestly had no idea what we were getting into, but I’ve wanted to see a real burlesque show every since I saw the iconic movie with Christina Aguilera and Cher.
We went to The Slipper Room in lower Manhattan on Saturday, Jan. 19. Tickets were only $20 at the door and it got you in for both the 9:30pm show and the midnight show. Note: The midnight show gets a little more risqué. It’s a very small, vintage club with a stage and an upstairs balcony. Seating was first come first serve, so we grabbed a booth in the back and ordered some drinks. When the show started, we walked around to have a better view.
The show was full of interesting things! It was truly a visual treat lol. There were arial performers, a hula hooper, a hilarious host, and even a pregnant burlesque dancer! The show was full of body positivity, sensuality, and humor. It’s an experience I would definitely recommend for those willing to keep an open mind. We had a blast!
Birthday Brunch at Jackson’s Eatery
I officially turned 25 at midnight on Sunday, Jan. 20. After our night at the burlesque club we slept in and then went to brunch, where some of my other friends met us. Jackson’s Eatery in Long Island City is super cute and very delicious. It was my first time dining at the nautical-themed spot with light pouring in its large windows.
I drank an apple cider mimosa and had very filling chicken and waffles with pumpkin butter. And to top it all off, the restaurant played happy birthday for me and brought out a stack of pancakes with a candle on top! Too cute. And after brunch we strolled into a book store called Book Culture LIC and had a pretty chill day.
I had such a great time with my friends and I already have so many exciting things happening this year. I can’t wait to share more of my journey with you all! As always, thanks for your love and support!
xoxo, Kayla
