I Tried At-Home Microneedling

I Tried At-Home Microneedling

This is a sponsored post. Although I have been paid to feature this product, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

For those of you who don’t know, my day job is a commerce editor for the TODAY Show, which means I write about products and sales all day. I also love to try new things here on my blog. Basically, I’m a professional product guinea pig. And one of the categories of products that I get most excited about trying is skin care. I never fully developed my skin care regimen, but learning about new products and seeing how they effect my skin has really helped me understand the importance of proper skin care. And one skin care trend that I was definitely unsure about at first is at-home microneedling.

What is Microneedling?

There are a lot of articles out there on this already, but according to Allure, “Microneedling is when you use a dermaroller or microneedler over areas of the skin.” And the purpose of rolling pokey needles over your face is to stimulate collagen and increase the absorption of skin care products. You can get this treatment done by a dermatologist, but it can often be costly. So, I decided to try the at-home microneedling.

How the Derma Roller System Works

The Derma Roller System is a hand-held device that uses 200 extremely fine medical-grade needles to naturally stimulate collagen and elastin in the skin to promote healthier skin cells in the body, according to the brand. By renewing your skin cells regularly, you can treat things such as wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, scars, uneven skin and more.

I don’t have any major skin concerns right now, so I decided to focus on anti-aging. I got the 1.5mm Derma Roller System to use on my face. You can go smaller than that, but I wouldn’t get one any bigger unless you want to focus on other areas of the body. And since one of the points of microneedling is to increase product absorption, a good facial product is a must. I have tried two different options: the DermaC+ Anti-Aging Serum and the PerfectDerm Collagen Face Mask.

Steps for using the Derma Roller System for at-home microneedling

  1. Make sure your hands and face are clean and dry. Also make sure that your roller and the area around you are clean.
  2. Gently roll the Derma Roller over the areas you want to treat. In my case, I did most of my face with a focus on my cheeks and forehead. You roll over each area 4 times vertically, 4 times horizontally and 4 times diagonally to the left and the right. (You shouldn’t roll the needles over your lips or eyelids.)
  3. After the rolling, apply your face mask or serum.
  4. If you are doing the treatment during the day then you will also want to put on sunscreen when you’re done in order to protect your stimulated skin.

Results & Final Thoughts

As with most skin care products, it takes time to have noticeable results, especially when anti-aging is the focus. With that being said, you can definitely feel a difference in your face during and immediately after this treatment. You have to be careful because the roller is very pokey and it can hurt if you press too hard. But, as long as you follow the directions, I think it’s a pretty good skin treatment to do once in a while.

During and after using it, my face did get a little red, but that’s because the collagen was stimulating. I was pretty gentle while rolling my face and it didn’t hurt. If I wanted to do smaller areas, like right under my eyes for example, I would need a smaller roller. Mine was good for larger areas of the face, like my forehead and cheeks.

Right after I finished with the Derma Roller I put on the sheet mask, as seen above. It felt cool and relaxing. After waiting 20 minutes and rinsing my face, the redness was pretty much gone and my face felt very soft and clean.

The bottom line is, this treatment won’t magically cure your skin care concerns overnight, but it definitely did help my complexion and made me feel relaxed. I am interested to see more of the longterm benefits.
