A Look Inside The Coney Island Mermaid Parade

A Look Inside The Coney Island Mermaid Parade

Last weekend, I attended the 37th annual Mermaid Parade at Coney Island. This is the third summer in a row that Kailena and I ventured to Brooklyn for a beach day, but this was our first time catching the Mermaid Parade — and we were super excited!

According to Coney Island’s website, the Mermaid Parade was founded in 1983 with 3 goals: “It brings mythology to life for local residents who live on streets named Mermaid and Neptune; it creates self-esteem in a district that is often disregarded as ‘entertainment’; and it lets artistic New Yorkers find self-expression in public.”

The parade was indeed filled with art, creativity, and body positivity. I LOVED it! People of all shapes, sizes, genders, and ages were dressed in fun costumes. There were floats with balloons, funny signs, and tons of glitter. Everyone was eating, drinking, and hanging out at the beach. It was totally my type of vibe. It was crowded, but we got to see a lot of the parade. Afterwards, we got frozen margaritas, ate hot dogs, and laid out in the sun. I would definitely recommend checking it out one day if you’re ever in NYC this time of year!
