This year, I attended Afropunk in Brooklyn for the first time. I’ve been wanting to check it out for years and I was so excited to have the best group of friends to go with this time around. We all love to be creative and dress up — check out our looks for our Barbie picnic, the Black Panther 2 premiere, and Halloween weekend. Since Afropunk was actually back in September, this was one of our first times doing group looks together. We came up with themes for each day and basically just put our own spin on them to pull together our group outfits for Afropunk.
Before I get into the looks, I’ll tell you what Afropunk is for those who don’t know. Afropunk is an annual music festival that takes place in different cities. It’s been coming to Brooklyn since 2019 and has/will also taken place in tons of other locations, including Atlanta, London, Miami, Minneapolis, Paris, Brazil, and more. The festival celebrates Black culture through its food, venders, and (of course) musical performances. Afropunk was created as a space for Black people in the punk and alternative subcultures. Attendees love to dress up in creative, cultural, and celebratory festival wear, eat good food, and dance to some edgy underground artists. It’s definitely a great experience!
Fairycore Group Look for Afropunk
For day one, we did a fairy theme. I love how we all had our own take on it, but it still looked great together. Leah was a garden fairy — I LOVE how she made a turban to match her dress and added a flower wreath headpiece on top. Maryam had fairy godmother vibes in her light pink tulle dress, which SHE MADE herself! Anuli was giving Afro space fairy — and she also made her complete costume! I swear my friends are so impressive. And for my look, I did shades of blue with gold accents for a loose take on a water fairy.
For my fairy look I wore a puffy blue dress from Shein with a green ribbon tied around my waist to give it a bit more shape. My wings are from Amazon and so are the wing-shaped sunglasses. For shoes, I just wore my white chunky Steve Madden sneakers. And I was especially excited about my hair for this look. I did two bubble braids and wrapped a gold stretchy cord around them. Then, I added gold glitter to the part.
Goth Group Look for Afropunk
For day two, we did a completely different look with our goth group outfits. This was fun because it was totally different from how we all usually dress. It was definitely giving Black witch coven. Recreating this group look is also super easy because you literally just have to wear all black. And obviously you can make it more edgy with accessories and makeup: chains, harnesses, spikes, black lipstick, heavy eyeliner, etc.
For my outfit, I wore a sheer skater dress from Dolls Kill and fishnets from Snag. My black combat boots are from Steve Madden. For accessories, I found a body harness and spiked choker from Shein and added one of my many pairs of black sunglasses. My black lipstick is Kat Von D and I did a smudgy black eyeliner look that was much more dramatic than my usual makeup looks. I loved getting in touch with my inner emo girl!
It was also rainy and gloomy that day, which was very on brand for our looks. I carried a black and gray umbrella and didn’t even have to worry about my makeup smudging, haha!
Would you and your friends rock group outfits for Afropunk?
