On Sunday, February 9, Nicole Miller showed her Fall/Winter 2020 collection at Spring Studios. The “Rock ‘n’ Royalty” collection was creatively inspired by rebellious royalty (yes, as in Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s exit from the royal family) and ’70s British rock. Which, in my opinion, are a glorious combination, especially for a Fall collection.
The gender-inclusive garments definitely carried the theme well. The collection featured leather jackets, dresses adorned with little crowns, and a paisley pantsuit. There was a lot of print mixing and the clothes were rich in textures from velvet to faux fur to distressed black denim. In addition to that, the models also drove home the theme by having some fun on the runway. They smiled a bit, tossed their hair, and even threw up their arms a few times. It was very on theme and fun to see.
The pieces were definitely wearable, and will likely retail in the $100-$500 range, with the exception of a few more luxe items. The wild prints, spunky attitude, and easy-to-wear silhouettes are sure to make this collection desirable for all types of fashion-forward men and women, especially those with a little edge.
Inclusivity Check: This presentation felt very racially inclusive. There were a lot of models of color and it was gender inclusive as well. Sadly, no plus models were used. Most Nicole Miller pieces go up to a size 14 or XL, so although better than many other luxury designers, I’d love to see that expanded in future collections.
