NYC Pop-Up Exhibit: Love Me Hug Me

NYC Pop-Up Exhibit: Love Me Hug Me

As I’m sure some of you already know, I am kind of a self-proclaimed pop-up queen. Hitting up a NYC pop-up exhibit is a pretty frequent activity for me. Sadly, we’re all dealing with quarantine and social distancing right now, so there aren’t any pop-ups happening in my near future. But, I still wanted to share the last one that I attended (you know, before the entire country basically shut down). Hopefully this post can give you a bit of visual stimulation and raise some awareness while we’re all stuck in the house.

Love Me Hug Me (139 Wooster St.) is a NYC pop-up exhibit created to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s disease. According to the website: “The goal is to encourage visitors to cherish the present and seize the memorial moment. The scenes in the exhibition emphasize the issues of Alzheimer’s disease upon the young generation in an immersive way.”

The pop-up features seven rooms, which tell the love story of a couple whose memories are gradually stolen by Alzheimer’s disease. In the first room, you sit in a small theater to watch a short film about the couple, Modesto and Lolis. After that, you become immersed in artistic displays of their most cherished memories. From a room of butterflies to a pink hot air balloon, the installations make for very beautiful pictures.

Exhibit founder Elaine Hong drew inspiration from her grandparents’ love story and the movie Wrinkles. “Love is the best medicine for any sickness. I hope all participants will care more about Alzheimer’s disease group after visiting the exhibition,” she shares.
