What It's Like To Be A Groomswoman

Since the moment I saw Carrie Bradshaw in a stylish suit at Standford’s wedding in Sex and The City 2, I imagined being a groomswoman at one of my best friend’s weddings. I grew up with a group of guy friends that I was very close to. Two of them, Quran and Kymo, have been like my brothers since the seventh grade. So, when Q was going to be the first of us to get married, I was honored that he made my dream of being a groomswoman come true!

With this being a “non tradition” way of doing things, we got to make our own rules. Over the years, I had become good friends with Q’s wife (she actually became my regular hair braider), so she was very kind and open to my outfit suggestions.

What does a groomswoman wear?

Personally, I was super excited to rock pants and a tie, while putting my own feminine twist on it. Obviously, a groomswoman should match the groomsmen so it remains cohesive. Since the guys were wearing navy blue suits, I found some cute high-waisted navy dress pants on Amazon. To match their white button shirts, I got a white button shirt as well, but mine has short sleeves and more feminine silhouette. I got a blush pink tie, which was also the same as the guys. And I opted to forgo a jacket altogether. With it being an outdoor summer wedding, I didn’t have to worry about needing sleeves.

The accessories are the main thing that allowed me to jazz the look up. Since the men wore brown shoes, I went with a nude heel (and you know I had my sneakers waiting for me in the car). I wore my hair big and curly. For jewelry, I kept it simple and wore silver hoops and a silver bracelet. My makeup was a soft glam with light pink and nude color palette.

Tips for being a groomswoman

Here are just a few quick things to consider if you get the opportunity to be a groomswoman or if you’re thinking about having one in your wedding:

I did go to the bachelor party and we had a great time. It was pretty chill, at a rooftop bar, nothing crazy. So it might depend on the scene and how comfortable both you and the couple are with you attending.
When it comes to getting ready beforehand, I did get ready at the hotel with the groomsmen. They had all been my friends for many years, so it was not uncomfortable for any of us. Depending on the situation, you could also get ready with the bridesmaids or get ready on your own.
And make sure you have fun!!! This is a cool experience that you’re sharing with close friends or family and you should make the most of it!
