Black Girl Cartoon Character Halloween Costumes

Black Girl Cartoon Character Halloween Costumes

I love dressing up for Halloween. Sometimes I’m kinda lazy and last-minute with it, but sometimes I’m super extra and go all out with a theme. And this year was the latter! I’ve wanted to do Black girl cartoon character Halloween costumes for a while, so I was super excited to finally execute it! Personally, I feel like there aren’t enough Black girl main characters in mainstream media, and that includes cartoons. When you’re a kid, it can mean so much to see characters on TV that look like you and that feel relatable. So, I want to show some appreciation for a few of the dopest Black girl cartoon characters out there.

Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog

Princess Tiana is the first Black Disney Princess cartoon character. The movie was released in 2009 and is currently available to stream on Disney Plus. It’s one of my absolute favorite Disney movies. Although the top part of this costume doesn’t fit me great (big boob probs) I love the detail. It’s super cute and sassy. The corset part is velvet and it’s not itchy or uncomfortable at all. I added some red lipstick, put my hair up in a bun with the tiara, and grabbed a frog plushie as a prop.

Penny Proud from The Proud Family

The Proud Family was one of my favorite shows as a kid. I always felt like Penny was the most relatable cartoon character for me because of her driven personality, diverse friend group, and loving family. This show was hands down one of the best cartoons to air on Disney Channel. This costume was super simple because it was put together with regular clothing items I found on Amazon. And the hair was just two pigtails — cute and easy.

Susie Carmichael from Rugrats

Susie is probably one of the most recognizable Black girl cartoon characters because Rugrats was such a huge show. I loved Rugrats as a kid! I definitely feel like Susie deserved more air time, but I loved that she was smart, sweet, and a good friend. This costume was purchased on Etsy and shipped from China, so keep that in mind if you ever want it for a specific date. It’s very comfy! The dress is a little long, but everything did fit well. You could also DIY your own version by getting a yellow dress and sewing on the purple flower print with some fabric. Then just add some purple leggings and red shoes.

Numbuh Five from Codename: Kids Next Door

Although this costume was one of the easiest ones, it also turned out to be one of my favorites! I feel like most kids who watched Cartoon Network in the early 2000s watched Codename: Kids Next Door. Numbuh Five was obviously the best character on the show imo. She was cool, chill, smart, and honestly just a badass. I found the perfect red hat on Amazon and for the dress, I just had to add some white tape to the sides. The hair is in a simple braid. And for accessories, gold hoops and white sneakers.

Costume Details:

  • Blue dress from Amazon
  • White tape from Amazon (for side of the dress)
  • Red hat from Amazon
  • Gold hoop earrings
  • White sneakers (mine are Ivy Park x Adidas, currently sold out)

Bliss from The Powerpuff Girls

Since Bliss joined The Powerpuff Girls much later in 2016, I’m not as familiar with her character. However, I was obsessed with The Powerpuff Girls as a kid and I was very excited when they finally added a Black one. I really like her purple outfit and teal hair, and I know I would have loved her as a kid. This costume consists of a purple dress, black belt, and teal wig all found on Amazon. Then I just added some white bike shorts and black sneakers.
