How To Be Comfortable In A Bodycon Dress

Every since I interned at Nylon Magazine in early 2017, I’ve been obsessed with walking the cobblestone streets of SoHo. Whether it’s the impeccable street style of those much richer than me, the designer stores and boutiques, or the many blogger photoshoots happening outside of trendy cafes, that area of Manhattan is just engulfed in fashion. So last month when my friend Alan was in town to do some photoshoots with me, I immediately suggested heading to SoHo so I could join the ranks of NYC style bloggers who do fashion shoots in the elegant destination.

Aside from the photoshoot, we were also planning on exploring some shops and grabbing dinner with friends, so I wanted to be comfortable. For those of you who are not familiar with my style, comfort is kind of my thing. I love bright colors, faux fur, and sequins as much as the next fashionista, but sneakers and leggings are MY JAM.

I decided to rock my new casual bodycon dress that I got from H&M. Fittingly, it has the word “Manhattan” right across the front. As a curvy girl, I know the struggles of wearing a bodycon dress: sometimes you may feel insecure about your stomach line, sometimes they ride up in the back, and sometimes you may suffer from the dreaded chub rub! I have been a victim of all of the above. However, I have found a few tricks that make me feel super confident and comfortable while rocking a bodycon dress.

Also, I do realize that this particular dress isn’t the best example of a bodycon, but I definitely do own some that are more form-fitted (check out my birthday dress). So although this dress is kind of a mash-up between a bodycon and a T-shirt dress, all of these tips still apply!

The most obvious solution to these problems is spanx or bike shorts. Not only do they smooth out your tummy lines, but they also protect your booty from peaking out the back. Now I have ZERO problems with women flaunting their curves and belly lines, but if you happen to worry about covering up your butt when you bend over then spandex shorts are the best option in my opinion. You can actually see my black spanx a little bit in these photos because of my dress’s side slit, but I actually thought it was cute! Hey, anything can be a LEWK as long as you feel good in it!

In addition to spanx, I also like to apply deodorant to my inner thighs to prevent chub rub. If you have thick thighs and you’ve never heard this tip before then I strongly suggest trying it out. Especially in the summertime, deodorant is the #1 thing that saves me from chub rub. Sometimes shorts or spanx ride up and my thighs still end up in pain, so that’s why I like to double up and use both the shorts and deodorant.

Lastly, it’s important to wear bodycon dresses with a length, sleeve, and neckline that works for you. A lot of the time people think of bodycon dresses as super short club dresses, but I actually prefer a length closer to my knees. That helps me ensure that my butt won’t pop out (#BigBootyProblems). And although I am not picky with the neckline, I do prefer to have some kind of a sleeve.

I paired my bodycon dress with my favorite summer sneakers, my polkadot Comme des Garçons PLAY Converse, a fun printed bag that I got at a street market in Italy, and some black Ray-Bans. I also used some red lipstick to bring out the other red details in the bag and shoes.
