One of the biggest trends going around in the beauty world right now is CBD products. Whether it’s adding hemp oil to serums, lotions, or even mascara, many popular beauty brands want a piece of the action. And Milk Makeup seems to have a pretty good handle on this trend. The vegan, cruelty-free, and paraben-free makeup and skincare brand has crafted some best-selling beauty products meant to “calm and sooth” your skin. I was intrigued, but my biggest question was: Do CBD beauty products actually work?
And by “work” I don’t mean that you’ll get high from putting on a face mask — that’s not what CBD beauty products are for. Here are a few fast facts you should know about CBD beauty products, sourced from Fortune and Health:
- Cannabidiol — or CBD for short — is a non-intoxicating, non-psychoactive extract of a hemp plant.
- Hemp was legalized as an agricultural crop in 2018.
- Hemp is a cousin of the marijuana plant and both are part of the cannabis family, but hemp plants contain no more than .3% THC (which is the psychoactive ingredient that gets people high).
- CBD contains fatty acids and other nutrients that can be beneficial for your skin.
Kush Stash Bag Set
I bought the Kush Stash Bag Set from Sephora, which is a cute little makeup bag full of Milk Makeup’s CBD and cooling water favorites. With a 4.7-star rating on Sephora’s website, I was curious if it was worth the hype.
Inside the bag, you get: a kush lip balm in “Green Dragon,” a cannabis hydrating face mask, a mini kush high volume mascara, a pair of cooling water eye patches, and a mini cooling water stick. At full price, the set is $65, which sounds kind of expensive. However, I will say that it is a pretty good selection of products and most collections like this (especially from a popular brand) are going to be in that ballpark. And as mentioned above, these products are all vegan, cruelty-free, and gluten-free.
So, here’s what I think about each of them:
Kush Lip Balm in “Green Dragon” ($16, Sephora)
This lip balm is formulated with a hemp-derived cannabis sativa seed oil, shea butter, and moringa butter. These ingredients are meant to hydrate, smooth, and calm your lips. I honestly really like this lip balm. Although it appears green, it’s actually clear when you apply it. It’s hydrating, but not too slick. It has a slight cool feeling when you put it on. And the packaging is very nice quality — the tube and lid are magnetic.
Cannabis Hydrating Face Mask ($26, Sephora)
This is a solid clay mask stick meant to moisturize, calm, and revitalize your complexion. It contains cannabis sativa seed oil, aloe, and kaolin clay. I personally love clay masks and the fact that this one is in a stick is already a major plus. This makes it WAY less messy and easy to pack for travel. I do feel like it calms, hydrates, and rejuvenates my skin. I have more oily skin and this doesn’t have any negative effects when I take it off. It seems to help with redness, dryness, and dull complexion.
Kush High Volume Mascara ($12+, Sephora)
Out of all of the products in the set, this is the only makeup product. So, of course, I was very curious about its benefits. This mascara is formulated with nourishing, hemp-derived cannabis seed oil and heart-shaped fibers to give you voluminous lashes. It’s honestly pretty good! Now, do I think you NEED CBD in your mascara? No, not at all. But, I will say that this gives decent volume. It is a little flakey, but it didn’t really clump once applied. It’s not super dramatic, but it does make a difference. I would say that it’s not going to be my go-to mascara, but I do like it.
Before & After
The last two products are NOT CBD-infused, but I wanted to include them because they came in the Kush Stash Bag.
Cooling Water Eye Patches ($22 for six pairs, Sephora)
I love under eye patches. I can’t speak much to the longterm effects, but I will say that the short-term benefits are really nice. Basically you just place the gel side of these patches under your eyes, leave them on for 10-15 minutes, and toss them when you’re done. It’s pretty much a sheet mask for your eyes. You can also refrigerate them for an extra chill, which can be very soothing. These patches contain caffeine, seawater, lavender, and aloe. These ingredient help to minimize puffiness, redness, fine lines, and dark circles.
Mini Cooling Water Stick ($15+, Sephora)
Similar to the product above, this stick should be applied under your eyes to help with puffiness and dryness. It also contains caffeine, sea water, and aloe. Personally, I prefer the patches because I feel like they’re more effective. But, this is a very similar option, which is also mess-free and will last longer than the patches.
