NYFW Review: BLANCORE FW20

NYFW Review: BLANCORE FW20

On Friday, February 7, Blancore presented its Fall/Winter 2020 collection at Spring Studios. The collection was called Lost Elf and was meant to raise awareness about sustainability. According to the story told in the audio at the start of the show, a “Lost Elf” is a fictional creature that takes care of the material things we have lost and left behind throughout our lives, such as the toys we once cherished as children. Linking this fantastical idea to the very real problems of waste, pollution, and climate change was pretty genius in my opinion.

The show opened with a more whimsical feel. It featured a lot of pastel pinks and blues, along with elfish hats and pointed shoes. These were some of my favorite looks, as they felt like they came straight out of a fairytale, but with a bit of a modern twist. Then, the looks started to transform into something more structured and kind of edgy. The magical forrest elves began to look more like worker elves. The airy look slowly became more earthy.

There were very creative jacket silhouettes that looked like abstract art. I could tell that every single detail was precisely thought out. The accessories really caught my attention too. Some models wore what appeared to be decorative, sheer medical masks on their chin, which felt eerily timely. Some looks were accessorized with goggles, like the ones my dad would wear in a steel plant. And towards the end, the models had teddy bears popping out of their pockets and showing through their sheer bags to represented our “lost toys.”

The collection had many wearable pieces, while still feeling exciting and artistic. It definitely wasn’t a boring show and I will definitely be on the lookout for what Blancore has to offer in the future.

Inclusivity Check: This show was decently inclusive in terms of race and I give them props because the only model in cornrows was actually a black woman. It was also gender inclusive. Sadly, it was not size inclusive.
